Personal Profile For The Speaker Of The County Assembly Of Nyeri Hon. James Gichuhi MwangiΒ 

Born in Kiawaithanji Village, Kiawaithanji Sub-location, Tetu Constituency in Nyeri County, Hon. James Gichuhi Mwangi started his primary school education at Kiawaithanji Primary School in Tetu and later joined Koelel High School Gilgil for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education. After successful completion of his high school education, he joined Moi University to undertake a Bachelor of Law Degree followed by admittance to the Kenya School of Law for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law. Currently he pursing Master’s Degree in International Law at the University of Nairobi.

In October 2005, he was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court marking the beginning of his law practice starting as an Associate at G.K Kibira Advocates. Due to his diligence and commitment to the practice, within a year, Hon. Gichuhi became a Senior Partner at Wamahiu Kimeria & Company Advocates a position he held until 2010 when he established his own Law Firm named Gichuhi Mwangi & Associates Advocates, a firm based in Nyeri, town.

Having practiced Law for over 12 years, in 2017, Hon. Gichuhi decided to serve his community by joining politics and he was overwhelmingly voted to represent Tetu Constituency as a Member of Parliament up until Aug 2022 leaving a remarkable legacy as a Tetu Legislature.

Guided by the philosophy that quality education is the basis for a successful society and people, Hon. Gichuhi prioritized and invested heavily in education. During his tenure, access to quality education took a new turn. He massively developed and upgraded Tetu constituency education facilities. Furthermore, and in pursuit of quality education, Hon Gichuhi ensured that all needy children were given bursaries on equity basis. His passion for education and distribution of bursaries to many earned him a new title dubbed β€œwakili wa bursary” across the constituency.

As a law maker, Hon. Gichuhi, pushed and vehemently supported bills and laws promoting environment protection and good farming environment. Moreover, he championed for the promotion of laws and policies that promoted economic and social empowerment, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

In full cognizance of the importance of security in transforming the constituency, Hon Gichuhi takes pride of being the first lawmaker in constituency to greatly improve the living conditions of police officers working in the constituency. He renovated police stations across the constituency for better service delivery. Additionally, all main centers in the constituency were installed with high-mast lighting. Of note, his commitment and conviction in matters of economic empowerment was exceptional.

Hon. Gichuhi distinguishes himself with a great legacy that he leaves behind. He undertook his duties with a distinct sense of civility and dignity. As a servant leader, he heeded the call to serve his constituent and never looked back.

Having served as a Member of Parliament for five years; on the 21 st of September 2022, Hon. Gichuhi vied for the position of Speaker of the County Assembly of Nyeri getting a majority vote by garnering a whopping 40 out of 42 votes from MCAs which shows the high level of trust and confidence the Hon. Members have in his leadership.

Following his industrious career spanning over 17 years both as a Senior Lawyer and as a Parliamentarian; Hon. Gichuhi brings on Board a wealth of knowledge and experience critical for transforming the Assembly, providing leadership and guidance to the Hon. Members and staff as well as ensuring the core mandates of oversight, legislation and representation are undertaken accordingly and consistently; a commitment he intends to uphold.

His vision is to make the County Assembly of Nyeri a model assembly marked with excellence in legislation, oversight and in carrying out representational functions that meet the aspirations of the Nyeri residents.

Stephen Kigotho yesterday conducted a site visit to Gakawa Ward in order to ascertain the status of Guara, Njaga, Karicho, Acacia dams among others. During the visit, the Committee confirmed the accuracy of a request for statement tabled before the House by Gakawa Ward MCA Hon. Charity Wangui, highlighting the numerous challenges facing the Gakawa residents as a result of dam leakages and overflows. The Committee Members challenged the Department of Water to act with urgency in order to reduce the adverse impacts of such situations. COMMITTEE ON WATER AND SANITATION HOLDS DISCUSSIONS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER The County Assembly of Nyeri Committee on Water and Sanitation chaired by Gikondi Ward MCA Hon. Stephen Kigotho yesterday engaged the Officers from the Department of Water, Irrigation, Environment and Climate Change led by the CEC Mr. Fredrick Kinyua regarding the status of Guara, Njaga, Karicho and Acacia Dams located in Gakawa Ward.Under discussion were the steps to be taken in order to prevent the dams from leaking and overflowing. The meeting was occasioned by questions raised before the Water Committee by Hon. Charity Wangui (Gakawa Ward) on the measures that will be put in place in order to safeguard the neighbouring communities from the aforementioned dams' leakages and overflows.In her request for statement, Hon. Charity noted that these dams have been leaking, with the overflow getting into people’s homesteads, thereby exposing the Community to risks. ASSEMBLY CALLS FOR COMPLIANCE TO PUBLIC ROAD TRANSPORT REGULATIONS The County Assembly yesterday approved a motion seeking for enforcement of National and County Legislations governing the Public Road Transport Sector and other road use Regulations to maintain law and order by regulating and controlling traffic and preventing obstruction in public places and public roads among other areas respectively. In a motion moved by Hon. Agnes Wachira (Gender representative), the Member urged the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Transport to submit to the County Assembly for approval, Regulations on Matatu Termini for subsequent enforcement.Hon. Agnes also urged the Executive to facilitate a sensitization Programme with Public Transport stakeholders on the importance of adhering to the Public Road Transport and Road use regulations and on the impact of non-compliance.In a sitting chaired by the Speaker Hon.
